GUWAHATI: The State government has decided to formulate a fresh rehabilitation policy especially for those people whose patta land has been eroded. The decision was taken for two main reasons. First, certain clauses in the present policy lack clarity; and as a result, the targeted people fail to get compensation. Second, the officials concerned also encounter problems in executing the policy at the field level.

Drafting of this new rehabilitation policy for the erosion-affected people is on, informed sources in the Revenue & Disaster Management Department.

Under the new policy, an erosion-affected family will get the maximum amount of Rs five lakh to buy a plot. Another key point is the liberty offered to that family to choose their new land. Besides, such a family will further get another amount of Rs 1.5 lakhs for the construction of their new house at the chosen plot of land.

Moreover, the proposed policy will also have provisions for compensation of the eroded patta agricultural land. An affected family will get Rs 1 lakh for one bigha. However, the limit has been fixed at maximum three bighas of new agricultural land.

Once the drafting is completed, it will be forwarded to the Minister in charge of the department and the Finance department. Following their nod, the policy will be placed before the Chief Minister; and finally the State Cabinet for their approvals.
