GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has decided to start informal classes for students of Class XII and third year of TDC (three years degree courses) from September 15.

Addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan here on Saturday the Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said informal classes would be an experiment of the government towards resuming academic activities in schools and colleges in the State. He said such classes would be conducted in four to five groups without sticking any formality such as fixed timings. The government will provide masks to those attending classes.

Sarma said even though the State Government cannot enforce its decisions on private schools and colleges, the latter could follow the government initiatives. He said teachers of the government schools who have undergone COVID-19 tests, will go to their respective institutions from September 1 to 15 to look after sanitization and seating arrangements. The school teachers, who are now conducting online classes from homes, will do the same from their schools, he said.

"Teachers of lower primary schools will allot academic assignments and home works to students when they will come to schools once in a week to have midday meals," the minister said, adding that the State Government would go for formal reopening of schools once the Centre comes out with a clear cut guidelines on the issue.

Sarma said altogether 16,944 who secured distinction and star marks in HSLC and AHM examinations 2020, will receive Rs 20,000 instead of laptops. The amount will be deposited to bank accounts of the students, he said.

On other hand the State Government has decided to Rs 2.5 lakh each to 8,000 old Namghars situated in different parts of the State. Preferences will be given to those Namghars at ST and SC areas. Sarma said 55 Namghars from each legislative assembly constituency will receive the financial assistance in the first phase. Namghars set up by the Assamese people in different NE States will get the financial assistance.

Sarma said the government will also offer Rs 10 lakh to 377 religious institutions (temple, mosque and church) which are 100 years old.
