Assam Higher Secondary Education Council modifies marking norms

GUWAHATI: A Notification issued by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has informed all educational institutions concerned that out of the 20 marks for project work, 12 marks will be evaluated internally by the concerned department/respective teacher and 8 marks will be evaluated by an external examiner along with an internal examiner of the department concerned based on viva voce (oral examination).

The viva voce will consider clarity on the topic, knowledge and understanding (5 marks) along with project presentation and communication skill (3 marks). The Notification directed the head of the department or the subject teacher concerned to make necessary arrangement for availability of the project report duly certified by the guide to the external examiner concerned on the day of the viva voce.

The Notification also mentioned that the pass mark in the project work will be 8 marks out of 20 marks, while the pass mark for theory will be 24 marks out of 80 marks. Each student will have to pass individually in both theory and project work evaluation.

The Notification issued by the AHSEC also directed the head of the institution concerned to appoint the external examiner in consultation with the department of the concerned subjects. It further stipulated that the external examiners should be senior faculty of government/provincialized higher secondary schools/colleges/universities and will have to be appointed by the head of the department/institution in question. The internal examiner will also have to be appointed by the head of the department/institution.

The Notification added that this arrangement has been made on the basis of the existing syllabi of all the subjects having project work.
