GUWAHATI: The table has turned. Gone are the days when Assam Police would send its recruits to other states for training. Now the police forces of other states keep sending their recruits to Assam at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy for precision training.

Marking a milestone in interstate police cooperation, Goa has become the second state after Manipur to have sent its police personnel to Assam. These police personnel, who have completed their 43-week basic training at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon, took part in a passing-out parade as Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with his Goa counterpart Dr Pramod Sawant, attended the passing-out parade of Goa Police recruits at LBPA today.

The 700 recruits, who arrived at LBPA in October last year, underwent gruelling training in physical fitness, mental resilience, field tactics and weapon handling. After successful completion of the training, they have been inducted into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Indian Reserve Battalions in Goa.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr Sarma said, “It is a proud moment for us, as we expand our proven training capabilities and play a key role in preparing the next-generation security personnel to serve the nation with honour. Assam is ready to provide the best of its services to this important national cause.”

The Chief Minister said that though physically Assam and Goa are miles apart, the decision of the Goa government to send its police recruits to LBPA has brought both the states nearer. He said that the fact that Assam has been chosen as the destination for the induction training of the police recruits has reflected the inherent trust and cooperation between the two states.

Congratulating the recruits, Dr Sarma said that henceforth, the police personnel will be able to serve the people with the highest spirit of dedication and devotion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated this police academy on March 25, 2025. Since then, the institution has been imparting regular training to the police personnel of Assam. The Assam Chief Minister said that the training has given an opportunity to Goa Police recruits to familiarise themselves with the culture and heritage of Assam. He also said that during the period of training, even Assam police personnel had a chance to acquire knowledge on the culture of Goa. He, moreover, said that the Assam-Goa relation, a manifestation of national integration, will receive a new fillip from this interstate police cooperation.

Out of 700 recruits, 569 are male and 131 are female. Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant also spoke on the occasion. He said that the recruits being in the position of receiving their training at the prestigious institute like LBPA must consider themselves to be very lucky. On the occasion, the Assam Police personnel also demonstrated their skills through adventure sports.
