GUWAHATI: At a time when most of the guardians of students in Assam rush to private schools for the education of their wards, it has come to light that a large number of private schools in the state draw a blank insofar as the success rate in the high school leaving certificate (HSLC) examination is concerned.

In a recent appeal, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has urged parents of students to keep their eyes open to know the credentials of private schools before enrolling their wards.

According to the ASSEB, in the HSLC results 2025, as many as 141 private schools in the state drew blank (zero success rates). This is apart from 19 private schools in the state resorting to the malpractice of opening sealed question papers of HSLC examinations much before the scheduled time.

In its appeal, the board requested the parents of students to see the infrastructure, qualification of teachers, science laboratory, schools library, proper registration, etc., of private schools where they intend to enrol their children. The board said that it would extend all help to the parents of students if they intend to shift their wards from private schools to government schools now.

The number of the private schools that drew a blank in the HSLC examination in 2025 is 16 in Cachar, eight in Kamrup (Metro), four in Kamrup, five in Jorhat, etc. Such schools with a zero pass percentage are also located in districts like Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Baksa, Karimganj, Hailakandi, etc.

According to the board, some of the schools with pass percentages in Kamrup (M) are Milkway English High School, Bani Vidyapith High School, Belle View English High School, Assam Valley English High School, Manipuri Basti High School, etc.

Some of such schools in Kamrup are Champak Nagar High School, Sankardev Shishu Niketan (Uparhali), etc.

In Kokrajhar, Kembolpur High School, Jewary High School, Kalichanran Gurudev High School, etc., are some of the private schools with a zero pass percentage.

In the Cachar district, such schools are JRD Public High School, Marua Cherritable High School, Noor Khatoon High School, Poloi High School, BR Sahu Memorial High School, etc.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam High School, Anath Mission Girls' High School, Nabajagaran High School, etc., are some of the private schools with a zero success rate in the HSLC examination 2025 in the Barpeta district.

The Assam Non-Government Educational Institute (Regulations and Management) Act, 2006, has clearly spelt out the mandatory prerequisites to open a private school in the state. However, a section of private schools in the state have been running their business without adhering to the regulations. The very purpose of such schools is not imparting quality education but minting money at the cost of students' future.

There are private schools in unhealthy rented residential complexes without adequate open spaces. Congested approach roads to school buildings without scientific firefighting facilities run the risk of students' lives in the event of any disasters. Such schools compromise with the quality of teachers, as they often employ low-paid and underqualified teachers.

According to a report, the number of private schools in Assam in 2014-15 was 3354 from preparatory to secondary level. The number has risen to 5725 in 2023-24.
