GUWAHATI: The Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) delegation led by Speaker Biswajit Daimary met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka today. They held a fruitful discussion about the cordial relationship between India and Bangladesh.

On behalf of the Assembly team, the Speaker, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AGP MLA Remendra Narayan Kalita and AIUDF MLA Hafis Basir Ahmed Kashimi met Prime Minister Hasina. The visit to the Bangladesh Prime Minister is part of the goodwill mission from the Assam Assembly. The team left Guwahati for Dhaka on November 18, 2022, via Agartala.

Talking to The Sentinel, Speaker Daimary said, "We met the Bangladesh Prime Minister this morning. We had a cordial meeting on good neighbourly relationship, besides some joint policy matters."

Daimary said, "Assam's connectivity with Bangladesh is improving fast. The proposed road to Bangladesh via Karimganj will boost our trade and people-to-people ties with Bangladesh. The waterway to Bangladesh through the Dhubri sector is also developing fast. Bangladesh has developed border haats and townships. The fringe dwellers of both sides get the benefits of this development. We should develop Assam's border side to boost trade with Bangladesh."

Daimary thanked the Bangladesh government for the warm reception they offered.

He said that the Bangladesh government appreciated the role of India in solving border disputes between the two countries.

In the afternoon, the Assam delegation visited Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh National Parliament) and studied the parliamentary practices there.

The Speaker said that the team came to know the best parliamentary practices of the Sangsad, besides the ways of developing activities in the country.

Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was also present during the visit of the Assam legislators' team to the Sangsad. Talking to the media, she said, "We are glad to have received an Assam Assembly team led by its Speaker. The team has a good time over here. We interacted with them on how the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad runs under the constitution, how we frame laws, how our standing committees work, how the business advisory committee functions etc. We discussed the best parliamentary practices of Bangladesh Sangsad and Assam Assembly."

She said, "Since we are neighbourly countries, we need to strengthen our friendship. We should fight common issues like climate change, food security etc."
