GUWAHATI: Various communities in the world pray to rivers to appease them so as to get rid of their wrath. The people of Majuli reran this traditional belief today when they offered prayers before Mighty Brahmaputra, a male river, to save the river island from erosion.

Several villages in the lower Majuli have been under threat from the gobbling Brahmaputra. Heavy erosion by the river from Auniati Satra to Kordoiguri has made the villagers pass sleepless nights.

Residents, including Deka Xatradhikar of Bor Alengi Satra Chandan Goswami, from a few villages went to the bank of the Brahmaputra and paid obeisance and offerings.

Speaking to the media later, the Deka Xatradhikar said, "We've paid obeisance and offerings to appease the mighty Brahmaputra so that Brahmaputra Baba protects us from erosion. We prayed to the Brahmaputra Baba with a pious mind. However, apart from our religious point of view, the government will have to protect the river island from erosion through technology. We request the Chief Minister, Water Resources Minister, and the local MLA to pay a visit to erosion-affected lower Majuli and take necessary action."

An embankment in lower Majuli that never faced erosion earlier is also under threat as the river started eroding its nearby areas since last year.
