Guwahati: Over 55% of the construction work has been completed on the 4-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya. The 19.28 km-long bridge project is scheduled to be completed by September 2028.
NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.) sources said that work on the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge over the Brahmaputra River, including the approach roads, is going on in full swing. The bridge is being constructed by construction firm Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T).
The work was awarded to L&T in November 2020, and the appointment date was issued on December 15, 2020. Appointment date refers to the actual start of work on a project by the firm that is allotted the construction work.
Being a mega project, the progress of the work is directly monitored by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
This project is crucial for road communication in the lower Assam districts and the neighbouring state of Meghalaya. The bridge project will connect Dhubri on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra with Phulbari in Meghalaya on the south bank of the river on NH 127 B. Currently, only river vessels, like boats and ferries, operate between the two places on opposite sides of the Red River. Anyone intending to travel by road from Dhubri to Phulbari or vice versa, as well as to Mankachar and South Salmara in southwestern Assam, has to travel via the Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts, which increases travel time by several hours. After completion of the bridge, travel time between the two points will be cut down to just 35-40 minutes.
The total length of the entire project, including the approach roads, is 19.28 km, with a total project cost of Rs 4,997 crore. The actual length of the portion of the bridge over the Brahmaputra is 12.62 km. After mobilizing machinery and manpower, work was started by L&T in the first half of 2021.
