GUWAHATI: The police arrested 242 petition writers (not authorized to do so) for lodging FIRs in various police stations across the state on Saturday night.

The State government arrested land brokers, drug dealers and peddlers, teer gamblers and others earlier. The government did ask the police stations to stop the menace of petition writing by brokers who 'manipulates people to slap stringent sections of the law to make cases stronger. Such petition writers charge cash from people who want to lodge FIRs in various police stations.

The police arrested the highest number of 37 petition writers from the Kamrup district, followed by 19 in Baksa, 13 in Goalpara, 12 each in Bongaigaon and Nagaon, ten each in Karimganj and Cachar, nine each in Jorhat, Darrang and Hailakandi, eight each in Lakhimpur, Hojai and Guwahati (five in Guwahati East Police district, 1 in Guwahati Central Police district and 2 in Guwahati West Police district), seven each in Dhubri, Biswanath Chariali and Kokrajhar, six each in Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Udalguri, five each in South Salmara-Mankachar, Golaghat, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, four in Tinsukia, three in Barpeta, two in Charaideo and one in Bajali.

Talking to media here today, DCP East Guwahati Police District Subrajyoti Bora said, "There is nothing wrong in writing an FIR for a person who cannot write. However, often the petition writers charge cash and manipulate the complainants to slap some stringent sections on the pretext of making cases stronger."
