GUWAHATI, Jan 9: With an eye to tackle armed insurgents in their jungle routes and hideouts, around 194 commandos of Assam Police are being trained in counter- insurgency techniques and other nuances of jungle warfare.

The commandos are being given training under the supervision of CRPF at Assam Commando Battalion Headquarters at Mandakata. The commandos took part in a demonstration of jungle warfare in the headquarter premises. They were given training in carrying wounded soldiers while climbing a steep wall, camouflage, concealment, ambush and counter-ambush techniques, among others, amidst rounds of applause from onlookers.

“On the direction of the Chief Minister, we had decided that fit men of Assam Police from all ranks will get counter-insurgency and jungle warfare training. In second part of the training, commandos will be taken to real jungles for practical training. Jungle warfare is a technique that needs to be stressed upon as this region has dense jungles, especially along Aruchal, galand and Bhutan borders, which insurgents are found using to their advantage,” said DGP Mukesh Sahai.

“Counter strategies involve three parts — solid defence, strong attack and swift counter attack. Learning the strategies can help us in a big way to deliver at the highest level,” Sahai added.

On the sighting of a Pakistani flag on one of the chaporis in Dibrugarh on Sunday, Sahai said it could have been done by some miscreants in the wake of eviction drive conducted in those parts recently.

Assam Police ADGP (training and arms) AK Sinha Kashyap and ADGP (administration) KV Singh Deu and other senior police officials were present on the occasion.
