GUWAHATI: The Assam Police keep watch on people who come to Assam with medical or tourist visas but are active in anti-India activities, disturbing the communal harmony here.

The Union Ministry of External Affairs has cancelled the tourist visa of an intellectual from Bangladesh who wanted to come to Assam in December 2021. The Centre took the move following a request from the Assam Police.

Likewise, in February 2021, a Bangladeshi came to Assam with a medical visa. He, however, engaged himself in anti-Indian activities in the state. The Assam Police pushed him back to Bangladesh.

Talking to The Sentinel, ADG (SB) Hiren Nath said, "The Assam Police are keeping watch on violation of visa rules, besides anti-India activities and activities that cause communal disturbances here. We warn the organizers that the police will book them in the appropriate section of law if their guests deliver any anti-India speech or do anything that may disturb communal harmony in the state."

According to sources, Islamic thinker and writer Maulana Jalal Uddin Osmani from Bangladesh got the invitation as the chief guest at the annual function of Fatikgroh Jame Masjid in Barpeta on December 27, 2021. The Assam Police went through the antecedents of Maulana Jalal Uddin Osmani and found that he had precedents of delivering anti-India and provocative speeches. Soon the State police requested the Union Ministry to cancel his visa.

Another Bangladeshi national named Hossain Ahmed came to Assam on a medical visa in February 2021. His destination was Vellore in Tamil Nadu. However, he came to Assam directly via West Bengal for religious activities. He was hopping from one district to another in Assam – Barpeta, Morigaon, Dhubri, Mankachar, Goalpara, Halakandi, Karimganj etc., — and raising funds for the Rohingya Muslims. The Assam Police traced him to Patharkandi in the Karimganj district on February 16, 2021, when he was delivering a religious speech at Tilapara. The police pushed him back to Bangladesh on February 17, 2021, through the Sutarkandi check-post.

According to sources, a few organizations have been active after the Gorukhuti eviction drive. They are trying to give a colour to the eviction drive. The sleeper shells of some organizations are working in certain sar areas. All these are on the police radar.
