GUWAHATI/BOKAJAN: In two separate incidents, the police seized ganja worth Rs 15 crore near Jorabat and heroin worth Rs 10 crore from Bokajan in the past 24 hours.

Jorabat Police on Thursday intercepted a truck carrying around 2,500 kg of ganja near the Jorabat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Acting on a tip-off, an operation was launched by a police team led by the Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Partha Sarathi Mahanta. The team intercepted a truck (HR38T2913), on its way to Assam from Manipur, carrying ganja worth Rs 15 crore. In the truck carrying ginger, the contraband consignment was hidden below the ginger. Jitendra Singh of Uttarakhand, the driver of the truck, and Ashok Kumar of Haryana, the owner of the truck, were arrested.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the police in a tweet: "#AssamAgainstDrugs HUGE CATCH! In another major success, @GuwahatiPol intercepted a truck and seized 2500 kg of Ganja in Jorabat. Also apprehended two accused. Great feat @assampolice. Keep it up."

Meanwhile, the Karbi Anglong police foiled a bid to smuggle a huge quantity of drugs into Assam on Wednesday. As reported, the Karbi Anglong police intercepted two vehicles (one Toyota Innova and the other Maruti Car) in the Dillai Tiniali area along the Assam-Nagaland border. On thoroughly searching the vehicles, the police team recovered 100 soap boxes containing approximately 1.263 kg of heroin hidden inside the vehicles. Police also seized cash amounting to Rs 75,000 from the vehicles.

Police also arrested four people identified as 33-year-old Daniel Kitharee, 22-year-old Kapani S, 36-year-old Sahjan Ahmed Borbhuyan and 57-year-old Md Sahabir Ali in connection with the recovery. Both Daniel and Kapani are residents of Tadubi in the Senapati district of Manipur. Sahjan is a resident of Borkhola in the Cachar district of Assam and Md Sahabir is a resident of Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

"The approximate value of the seized drugs is close to Rs 10 crore in the black market. Preliminary investigation revealed that the drugs were carried from Dimapur and were supposed to be delivered at Nagoan. We are working on the leads and a detailed investigation is on." SDPO John Das said.
