Guwahati: The proposal for the upgradation of the road from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), Borjhar, to Dharapur Chariali via SOS Village Mirzapur to four lanes has now been revised to be a six-lane road costing Rs 474.67 crore. The decision was taken in light of the upcoming terminal at LGBIA, which will lead to an increase in the volume of traffic passing through the road in the near future.

Originally, the road from LGBIA at Guwahati’s Borjhar to Dharapur Chariali via SOS Village was a two-lane one. During the tenure of the present state government led by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, a decision was taken to upgrade the road to four lanes under the PM-DevINE scheme under the Ministry of DoNER. Sanction was also given by DoNER to the proposed upgradation with a cost of Rs 271.45 crore.

However, of late, the Assam government reviewed the proposed upgradation, and a proposal was forwarded to DoNER to further widen the road to six lanes. Recently, the Empowered Inter-Ministerial Committee (EIMC) of PM-DevINE organized a meeting in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Secretary DoNER, where the new proposal of the Assam government was discussed. In the meeting, the Assam government stated that the modification to the upgradation plan will entail a revised cost of Rs 474.67 crore.

As DoNER had already sanctioned an amount of Rs 271.45 crore, an additional amount of Rs 203.22 crore will be required to convert the road to a six-lane one. During the EIMC meeting, the representative of the Assam government stated that the additional cost will be borne by the state government. DoNER and MoRTH did not make any objection to Assam’s proposal.

However, it was decided that the matter would come up for discussion during the next meeting of the EIMC. The Assam government has been asked to provide some additional documents before the next EIMC meeting takes place.
