Assam: Quack practicing as medicine specialist for 23 years arrested

Guwahati: The state's drive against quacks, or fake medical practitioners, received a shot in the arm when Mihir Kanti Das, who has been practising as a medicine specialist in Hailakandi and Cachar districts for the past 23 years on the strength of a certificate in alternative medicine, was apprehended today.

According to Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery & Anti-Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration, the quack had come to the office of the Director of Medical Education (DME) for physical verification of his registration, the application for which he had made online earlier. It was on verification of his documents that he was exposed as a fake doctor.

Interestingly, the registration number provided by Mihir Kanti Das on his doctor's pad is 01895, which was found to be totally false, as no registration number of the Assam Medical Council starts with a zero. Also, his pad states that he is a medicine specialist with qualifications of MBBS and MD.AS (Silchar).

In fact, Mihir Kanti Das only possesses certificates in alternative medicine and not in allopathic medicine.

Following the revelation, Mihir Kanti Das was handed over to Dispur police. A case has been registered against him.
