GUWAHATI: The rising financial support to Assam from the Centre for the past four years has led to development in the state. The central financial support to the state has risen by 60 per cent since 2020.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The Government of India has always been supportive of Assam's growth aspirations since 2020. The Centre's support to Assam has risen by over 60 per cent to Rs 68,924 crore to carry forward our development vision. In 2019-20, the state government received Rs 42,427 crore from the Government of India."
The Chief Minister said that the state government is more determined than ever to accelerate the holistic development of Assam with renewed commitment. "We have been working towards being one among the top five states in the country. Honesty of one's purpose can ensure the achievement of any goal. We have been working for the development of all castes and creeds," he said.
According to official sources, the state government has always prioritized the interests of indigenous people in villages, and this is reflected in all government policies.
According to sources, the bulk of the state government's revenue expenditure goes for salary, pension and interest payment. In 2019-20, the government spent Rs 27,008 crore for salary, Rs 9,609 crore for pension, and Rs 4,438 crore for paying interest. These expenditures have increased to Rs 1,10,091 crore in 2024-25 - Rs 33,982 crore for salary, Rs 17,811 crore for pension, and Rs 9,597 crore for interest.
According to sources, the state government's own annual revenue earnings go for salary and pensions, and as such, the state government has to depend largely on the share of central taxes. The good news remains that Assam's share of central tax has been maintaining an upward trend. The state government received Rs 21,721 crore as the share of central tax in 2019-20, and that has risen to Rs 40,000 crore in 2024-25.
The state's share of central tax comes from the collection of income tax, corporate tax, wealth tax, union excise duty, customs duty and service tax collected by the central government.
