Guwahati: Rainfall in the past few days has brought some relief for the farmers in the state. From 13 districts with ‘large deficient’ rainfall in the mid part of July, the number has come down to 7 districts as of date.
The Assamese month of Sawan is ideal for transplanting paddy seedlings from nurseries to the agricultural fields. Due to deficient rainfall and lack of irrigation facilities, farmers were in a spot through the month and were praying to the rain god. Now, the rainfall witnessed in several districts over the past few days has brought a modicum of relief to them, as the time for paddy transplantation is not yet over. The farmers in these districts are now busy in their fields, trying to make up for lost time.
Earlier, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that drought will be declared in the state if no rainfall is experienced until August. According to IMD’s latest report, 7 districts of the state are still included in the category of ‘large deficient’ rainfall. The districts are South Salmara-Mankachar, Barpeta, Bajali, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, and Tamulpur.
In this monsoon, till date, only 6 districts in Assam received normal rainfall, while 21 districts received ‘deficient’ rainfall.
