New co-districts; Rs 250 crore for cancer hospital; celebration of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet took a slew of decisions in its meeting today, including new co-districts, the setting up of cancer hospitals, the celebration of Dr Bhupen Hazarika's 100th birth anniversary, etc. A year-long celebration will be organized on the occasion of the birth centenary of the 'Bard of the Brahmaputra'.

After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma briefed the media, where he said, "Today the cabinet decided to create 10 new co-districts--Boko, Palasbari, Borsola, Rangapara, Makum, Digboi, Teok, Mariani, Dholai and Dudhnoi."

The CM said, "The cabinet sanctioned Rs 250 crores for the under-construction cancer hospital. Already 9 cancer hospitals are functioning in the state. So far, we have spent Rs 2,500 crore. We are setting up the hospital in association with the Tata Group."

Regarding the celebration of Dr Bhupen Hazarika's 100th birth anniversary, the CM said, "The cabinet finalised several programmes for celebrating Dr Bhupen Hazarika's 100th birth anniversary. The celebration will start on September 8, 2025, and conclude on September 8, 2026. The opening and closing ceremonies of the year-long festival will be graced by either the President of India or the Prime Minister. Events will be held centrally in five places--New Delhi, Guwahati, Arunachal Pradesh, Kolkata and Mumbai. We will request RBI and the Government of India to issue a commemorative coin for Dr Bhupen Hazarika's birth centenary. A biography of Dr Bhupen Hazarika will also be written, and 10 lakh copies will be printed for distribution among the people of the state. The biography will be translated in all Indian languages and distributed in all district libraries in the country. A documentary on Dr Hazarika will also be prepared in both Assamese and English languages. To oversee the events connected to Dr Hazarika's birth centenary, a 50-member committee headed by me will be set up, and we will request CMs of all NE states be its patrons."

The CM further said, "To operationalise the four milk processing units in Bokakhat, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Bajali, the cabinet has approved handing over these infrastructure under Dairy Development Department to Northeast Dairy and Foods Ltd, a joint venture of the Governments of Assam and India."
