Guwahati: In view of the upcoming monsoon season, the Assam government has released an amount of Rs 100 crore for 35 districts and 39 co-districts as an advance to ramp up preparations for the inevitable floods in the state. Floods are knocking at the door, as the persistent rains in the last few days in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have already led to a rise in water levels in several rivers in the state.

Talking to the media on Wednesday, state Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta said, “Already several meetings on flood preparedness have been held, and all necessary instructions have been given to the District Commissioners regarding measures to tackle floods and distribution of gratuitous relief for the flood-affected people. Today, we released Rs 100 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to 35 districts and 39 co-districts as an advance. The money will enable officials to start flood protection works and prepare for relief material distribution. The districts have already been put on alert for the approaching flood season.”

Due to the heavy and persistent rainfall, the Kopili Hydro-Electric Project (KHEP) had to release excess water through the gates at Khandong dam. The discharged water is now posing a threat to the Kampur area of the Nagaon district.
