Assam: Thousands of landowners erected houses on government lands

As many as 4,47,916 families have erected houses illegally on government lands in various districts in the state.

GUWAHATI: As many as 4,47,916 families have erected houses illegally on government lands in various districts in the state. A section of these families legally own lands elsewhere in the state.

The district-wise numbers of the families who erected houses on government lands are 47,810 in Kamrup (Metro); 4,121 in the Sivasagar district, including 1,142 families owning land and houses elsewhere in the state; 3871 in Jorhat; 6549 in Golaghat, including 57 families owning lands and houses in other places; 749 in South Salmara; 1027 in Charaideo, including 440 families with lands and houses in other places; 43 in Cachar, including 15 families with lands and houses in other places; 4209 in Hailakandi; 19022 in Kamrup; 12491 in Bongaigaon; 7468 families with lands and houses in other places; 15298 in Dhubri, including 1165 families owning land in other places; 11776 in Biswanath, including 310 families owning lands and houses in other places; 1160 in Bajali, including 950 families having lands and houses in other places; 34437 in Lakhimpur, including 10576 families having lands and houses in other places; 12722 in Hojai, 8883 in Sonitpur, including 120 families having houses in other places; 14171 in Morigaon, including 4424 families with houses in other places; 77810 in Tinsukia; 460 in Majuli; 10321 in Dhemaji; 10922 in Dibrugarh, including 443 families with houses in other places; 62253 in Darrang, including 23168 families with houses in other places; 448 in Sribhumi, including 132 families having lands and houses in other places; 9598 in Nagaon, including 6487 families who have lands and houses in other places; 3459 in Nalbari, including 640 families having lands and houses in other places; 31065 in Goalpara, including 5562 families having lands and houses in other places; and 43191 in Barpeta, including 4947 families with lands and houses in other places.

The indigenous landless encroachers will get land settlement on application under the land policy of 2019, if found eligible, revenue and disaster management sources said.
