Assam Valley Literary Award for Dr Arupa Patangia Kalita

GUWAHATI, Dec 31: Renowned novelist and short story writer Dr Arupa Patangia Kalita has been chosen for the 27th Assam Valley Literary Award for the year 2016.

Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for her short story collection ‘Mariam Asten Athaba Hira Baruah’ in 2014, Dr Kalita has been honoured with many awards including the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Literary Award in 1995 for her novel ‘Ayanta’ and Katha Award in 1998 for her short story ‘Daibakir Din’.  

A prolific writer, she has several novels and short stories to her credit, several of which have been translated to other languages. Some of her prominent novels and short story collections are ‘Mrigabhi’ (1987), ‘Ayanta’ (1994), ‘Arunimar Swadesh’ (2001), ‘Felani’ (2003), ‘Tokora Bahar Sor Beji’ (2014), ‘Galatarangar Sur’ (2016), ‘Moruyatra Aru Anyanya’ (1992), ‘Morubhumit Menoka Aru Anya’ (1995), ‘Kaitat Keteki’ (1999), ‘Pas Sotalor Kathakata’ (2000) and many others.      

The Assam Valley Literary Award will be formally presented to Dr Kalita at a function in Guwahati in March.

The Award is given by Williamson Magor Education Trust as part of its endeavor to preserve and promote the literary heritage of Assam. The Trust was formed with the purpose of giving an impetus to education and cultural progress in the State. The Assam Valley Literary Award, which is part of the Trust’s endeavor to preserve and promote the rich literary heritage of Assam, was institutiolized in 1990.
