Guwahati: In light of the situation in Upper Assam, where a large number of people of suspected nationality are settling down or living in rented houses, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that if anybody trespasses the ‘borghar’ of the Assamese community (principal dwelling areas of the Assamese people), citizens and organizations will obviously speak up against such an intrusion. The CM, however, stressed that nobody should take the law into their own hands.

A few days back, some organizations in the Sivasagar district went to houses where people of suspected nationality are living on rent and asked the owners to turn out such people from their premises.

Speaking to the media today, the Chief Minister said, “I think the situation will take a turn for the worse if anybody contemplates putting the future of the Assamese people in jeopardy. If anybody tries to enter the ‘borghar’ of the Assamese people, the community will definitely speak out against the motives of such intruders. We cannot stop them from speaking out. In a few days, I will reveal a video in which ponds have been dug up on hundreds of bighas of land in the Lakhimpur district. The people who have dug such ponds are not erosion-affected. If they were erosion-affected people, they would have settled on land measuring one and a half kathas. But these people have dug ponds on huge tracts of land and are doing business out of these.”

“Districts like Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Sivasagar are the ‘borghar’ of the Assamese community. If anybody dares to intrude into the community’s ‘borghar’ and nobody opposes such a move, then who will secure the future of the Assamese people? The Assamese community should oppose such an attempt without taking the law into their hands. After this, such an opportunity will not come again. The Assamese community should protest against such intrusion but should refrain from taking the law into their hands. Matters of law are the responsibility of the police and the judiciary. If people do not protest, the judiciary will not know about such things,” the CM asserted.

Reacting to organizations asking house owners to turn out people of doubtful nationality, the CM said, “If people are offended, nobody should raise any objection to their stand. But turning out such people is the job of the police. Taking in tenants is a big problem in Assam. At first ‘they’ take a house on rent and then establish a mosque. After that, the xatra deserts the area. There should be no objection to any organization exposing this pattern. But nobody should enter such rented houses. This is the job of the administration. However, the organization can invite the house owners to consult on such matters.”
