GUWAHATI: The recovery rate of patients suffering from COVID-19 infection in Assam has surpassed the national average rate. Out of the total persons infected by the virus, 60 per cent of them have so far recovered. The State has now 40 per cent active COVID cases.

Nearly 3,000 patients have already been discharged from different hospitals after they were tested COVID-19 negative twice during their treatment. Around 2,000 patients are still undergoing treatment at hospitals.

The death rate of COVID patients is also the lowest in the country.

But the situation might change on the basis of results of the random tests of 50,000 samples. Under the targeted surveillance programme the State Health department has targeted to collect swabs of 50,000 persons across Greater Guwahati with an aim to ascertain whether COVID-19 has spread at the community level or not. There are reasons to suspect community spread of the virus in the city as COVID positive cases of vegetable vendors, milk vendors and other persons who do not have any travel history have been detected in the last few days.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that there would a tough time till Sunday as a huge number of people are returning to the State from outside. "After Sunday the number of incoming trains to Assam will decline. We hope that the number of positive cases will also show a slide. We hope to overcome the critical phase of COVID by the end of this month," Sarma said.

The State has so far conducted tested 2.58 swab samples.
