GUWAHATI: The move to upgrade the Bajali Civil Sub-Division to a full-fledged district is facing a new hurdle. It is due to the standing instruction from the Delimitation Commission not to create any district before publication of the Commission's report.

Against this backdrop, the General Administration Department (GAD) has moved the Commission to allow the government to form the Bajali District. Mentionably on two earlier occasions also, the Assam Cabinet had taken decisions to constitute the district.

The decision to form the district was taken by the State Cabinet in 2019. In its second meeting on the subject held on August 10, 2020, the Cabinet proposed that the new district will have 10 posts of officers besides 85 other posts.

The Central government had constituted the Delimitation Commission for Assam in 2019, to reconstitute the Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies.

At present, Bajali is a Civil subdivision under Barpeta district. There are 33 districts in Assam.
