GUWAHATI: Though there is still time for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to be held, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started strengthening the party's base in Assam.

The State BJP's main thrust is on capturing the seats it lost to the Opposition in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the last Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had won nine out of the 14 LS seats in Assam while its allies – the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) – did not win any seats. The five seats that were captured by the Opposition are Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar (won by an independent candidate), Nagaon and Kaliabor.

Out of these five seats, party sources said that the leadership is a bit sceptical of the Dhubri LS constituency because of the demographic population pattern of the constituency. However, the party has set a target of capturing the Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Nagaon and Kaliabor seats. Recently when Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda visited Assam, the two leaders made it clear in the core committee meeting that the central leadership of the party was expecting more seats from Assam in the next LS polls.

Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita said, "Our target is to win more than 12 seats this time. We will expand our base through development works and organizational strengthening activities. Several Union Ministers have been entrusted the responsibility of looking after the organizational activities in the parliamentary constituencies and holding public interactions."

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju recently made a three-day visit to the Barpeta constituency where he held meetings with party workers to get a grasp of the electoral status and position of the party in the constituency. He also held interactions with the public. Before visiting the Barpeta constituency he had visited the Kaliabor constituency and he will next visit the Nagaon constituency. In the same way, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal recently held several meetings with the party workers of the Kaliabor constituency.

"More Union Ministers are likely to visit Assam in the days to come because our focus is on capturing as many seats as possible," added Bhabesh Kalita.

The next Lok Sabha election will be held in many phases from April 2024.
