BJP Declares Former Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa As Candidate

GUWAHATI: The BJP on Monday nominated former Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam. This was informed by NEDA convenor and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma here on Monday after a legislature party meeting of the party at the Assam Assembly. Besides Sarma, among those present at the party meet were Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP State president Ranjit Kumar Dass. As per agreement, BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will field its candidate — Birendra Prasad Baishya — for the other seat. The two Rajya Sabha seats currently held by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress legislator Santius Kujur will fall vacant on June 14. The Election Commission has announced elections on June 7 to fill the impending vacancies to two seats from Assam in the Upper House of the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the AGP legislature party also had a meeting on the RS elections at the Assembly premises on Monday. Later AGP president Atul Bora and BJP State president Ranjit Kumar Dass also had a meeting.

Both Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Baishya will file their papers on Tuesday – the last day for nominations. Talking to the media, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa said. “I will have to shoulder a new responsibility. I shall endeavour to reflect the issues of the State and its people in Parliament.”
