GUWAHATI: To keep its personnel healthy and fit, the Assam Police have started statewide BMI (Body Mass Index) testing today. Announced on May 16, the BMI test will cover around 67,000 personnel of the State Police Force in 36 locations until August 31. DGP GP Singh had his BMI test at the 4th APBn, Kahilipara, today. The test has determined his BMI to be 25.

Speaking to the media, DGP GP Singh said, “Following a directive from the Chief Minister, the Assam Police have taken up a scheme to keep its personnel fit. At stage one of the scheme, we have made the personnel do all that they did at the time of their training. After the announcement of the scheme on May 16, we prepared a complete district-wise database of police personnel in the state. We want to keep our personnel fit. We have noticed that after a certain age, most of the police personnel face health-related problems. We will send the police personnel, who will have their BMI reading 30+ during the test, to the Dergaon training centre for one to three months to help them bring their BMI below 30.”

The DGP further said, “We will introduce blood pressure and sugar tests for the state police personnel later. We will also try to introduce CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasound tests for the police personnel.”
