‘Bodoland People’s Front to go solo in 2024 Lok Sabha polls’

GUWAHATI: In the new development in the politics of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has claimed that as of now, the party was not in any alliance with either the Bharartiya Janata Party (BJP) or the Congress, and that the party would go solo in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had attended the open session of the 62nd annual conference of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) on Sunday at Rani Khalaishree Fwthar, Patgaon in the Kokrajhar district. Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the meeting, the Chief Minister had hinted that the BJP-Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)-United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) alliance would be contesting the 2024 LS polls, but they would also take the help of the BPF.

When quipped about this, BPF Legislature Party leader and party spokesperson Durga Das Boro said, “The BPF is not with the BJP or the Congress now. We will contest the LS polls alone.” He further said, “Many UPPL leaders and workers are keen to join the BPF.” Boro said that the party’s CWC meeting was held recently. “In the meeting it was decided that the BPF will contest the Kokrajhar and Mangaldai seats alone in the 2024 LS polls. We will stick to this decision, and there is no question of going back on the decision,” said Boro.

“If any party wants our help in the LS polls, we will see what proposal the party puts before us and then decide accordingly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BPF president Hagrama Mohilary may have held talks which is why the party president has restarted organizational meetings,” he further said. Boro added that a conference of the BPF would be held at Barama on March 4, 2023 and in that meeting, the party will formulate its election strategy.

Slamming the UPPL-led Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Boro said, “BTC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro has failed in the administration of the council. The people of BTR have realized this now, and hence, at the recent BPF workers’ meets, many people came forward and joined our party. In fact, many UPPL leaders and workers have got in touch with the BPF leadership and expressed a keenness to join the BPF. From what I have been told, they will be joining the BPF within the next 10-15 days.”

In the 2021 Assam Assembly polls, the BJP had forged an alliance with the AGP and the UPPL while the BPF had joined hands with the Congress. However, after the defeat in the polls, the BPF decided to part ways with the Congress. Later, the BPF agreed to have a floor alliance with the BJP-AGP-UPPL alliance in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
