SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang said that as per the first phase of the Meghalaya-Assam boundary settlement, the erection of boundary pillars has been underway in at least three locations.
Speaking to the media in Shillong, Wahlang said, “For the first phase, the finalisation of the erection of pillars is happening now in at least three places that I am aware of.” Addressing the progress of phase two, Wahlang noted that the committees tasked with the matter have been granted an extension until March 31. However, he acknowledged potential delays due to the upcoming district council elections.
“Yeah, we have the committees, but for phase two, they have got an extension till March 31st, and we are hoping that the reports are submitted by then. But now, with the announcement of the district council elections, the chairman and members of the committees will be a little bit busy with campaigning or that, so maybe it’ll take a little bit more time, but it’s on track,” he said.
The Chief Secretary also highlighted recent engagements with his counterpart in Assam and a review meeting chaired by the Union Home Secretary in November. “I’ve had meetings with the Chief Secretary of Assam and also in the meeting presided and chaired by the Home Secretary in the month of November. We’ve had meetings on this to review the progress of the finalisation of phase one of the boundary MOU,” Wahlang added.
