TINSUKIA: Several organizations in Tinsukia have demanded suspension and legal action against two officials after the Tinsukia district administration failed to make public the inquiry report within the stipulated time into the allegation of demanding and accepting bribe for cremation from the family members of a deceased COVID patient.

In a joint memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam on Tuesday, the organizations — ATASU, AAMYCS, AJYCP, AASU, AMSU, TAIPA, AAHSU, AAHYP and PBS — stated that a junior engineer of Tinsukia Municipality, Nabajyoti Das alias Gam, in collusion with an employee of Tinsukia district administration, Nitu Saikia had allegedly demanded Rs 15,000 from the family members of Jhantu Dey who died due to COVID-19 on July 25. The family members, after taking loan, reportedly handed over the money to Das.

The organizations claimed that they were in procession of the recorded audio conversation between the deceased's daughter and Das, which later went viral in the social media. The organizations alleged that sensing trouble, Das returned Rs 5,000 to Dey's daughter after tendering apology. Das then engaged a few teenaged boys of the crematorium at Rs 500 each to cremate the body, they further stated.
