GUWAHATI: Five of the 31 candidates for the October 30 bye-poll in five LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies) in the state have criminal cases against them.

While two candidates are under matriculates, five are matriculates, eight are Higher Secondary passed, and the rest are graduates and postgraduates. The assets of the candidates range from Rs 23,000 to over Rs 10 crore.

These facts came to light following a study conducted by Assam Election Watch.

The report of Assam Election Watch says that an Independent candidate from Thowra LAC Dhaijya Konwar has three cases against him, an Independent candidate from Gossaigaon LAC Kamal Rai has one case against him, Phanidhar Talukdar of Bhabanipur LAC has two cases, Rupjyoti Kurmi of Mariani has two cases, and Khairul Anam Khandakar of Gossaigaon LAC has three cases.

Phanidhar Talukdar has assets worth Rs 10.78 crore, Saukat Ali Ahmed of Bhabanipur LAC has Rs 1.70 crore, Ganesh Kachari of Tamulpur has Rs 7.06 crore, Dhruba Kumar Brahma Narzary of Gossaigaon LAC has Rs 6.60 crore, Khairul Anam Khandakar of Gossaigaon has Rs 1.93 crore, Manoranjan Konwar of Thowra LAC has Rs 3.50 crore, Sushanta Borgohain of Thowra LAC has Rs 2.48 crore, Luhit Konwar of Mariani has Rs 1.85 crore and Rupjyoti Kurmi of Mariani has Rs 1.61 crore. Ariful Islam of Bhabanipur LAC owns the lowest amount of Rs 23,000.

Phanidhar Talukdar passed HS, Merajul Haque of Bhabanipur passed class VIII standard, Ariful Islam from Bhabanipur passed class V standard, Ganesh Kachari of Tamulpur passed HS, and the rest are graduates and postgraduates. This bye-election in Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Gossaigaon, Thowra and Mariani is an all-male contest.
