GUWAHATI, Sept 11: The Assam government has registered cases against as many as 16 IPS and two IAS officers serving in the State in connection with various offences.

Replying to a written query by MLA Prab Kalita, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal told the Assembly on Monday that while cases have been registered against 2 IAS officers and 6 IPS officers, departmental proceedings have already been initiated against 10 other IPS officers.

Patowary informed the House that a corruption case has been registered against IAS officer Kumud Chandra Kalita. A case of child harassment has been registered against another IAS officer Chohan Doley. Cases of various offences have been registered against IPS officers Mridul Kumar Dutta, Satya Raj Hazarika, YT Gyatso, N Rajamarthandan and Mridulanda Sarma.

On the other hand, departmental proceedings have already been initiated against IPS officers Violet Barua, Prasanta Sagar Sangmai, Debajyoti Mukerjee, Mihir Goswami, Jitmol Doley, Moinul Islam Mondal, Vinod Kumar, Prasanta Kumar Dutta, Jivan Singh and SA Karim. The development has come at a time when Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has reiterated zero tolerance policy against corruption and lack of accountability in the State’s administration and police. The CM has warned that no one, irrespective of position or chair, will be spared if found involved in graft and misuse of official position.

The Assam State Police Accountability Commission has also been calling for accountability and transparency at various levels of police hierarchy. According to the commission, death in police custody, molestation or rape, uuthorised detention or arrest, forceful deprivation of a person of rightful ownership or possession of property, blackmail or extortion and non-registration of FIR are all instances of serious misconduct on the part of police.

MLA Prab Kalita hoped that appropriate actions will be initiated against guilty officials.
