Centery of students’ movement in Assam celebrated

GUWAHATI, Dec 25: The centery of the students’ movement in Assam was celebrated across the State on Sunday. The programme was centrally organized by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) at the Latasil playground here along with 100 other places across the State.  It may be mentioned that the first students’ movement in the State dates back to December 25, 1916 with the formation of the Asom Chatra Sanmilan at Latasil playground with Raxaraj Laxmith Bezbaruah as president.

On Sunday, 100 special flags marking the centery of the occasion were unfurled at 100 places across the State by 100 special guests at the same time – 10:30 am.

On request from AASU, renowned sculptor Biren Singha designed the special flag for the occasion.

At the Latasil playground, the special flag was unfurled by Gauhati University vice-chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika. Smriti Tarpan and Sahid Tarpan were also held on the occasion. The memorial lecture recently delivered by gen Saikia on 100 years of the students’ movement in the State was released in the form of a book titled ‘Axomot Chattra Sangathonor Eso Basar’ at the Latasil playground on Sunday.   

In Jorhat, the Asom Chatra Sanmilan’s first mouthpiece ‘Milan’ was iugurated after reprinting.

The centery of the students’ movement was also celebrated with enthusiasm in Haflong, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Karbi Anglong among other places of the State.
