Central team to assess flood damage in Assam

 Flood situation remains grim; 10 more lives lost

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that an inter-ministerial central team will arrive in Assam soon to assess the damage caused by the prevailing flood situation in Assam.

Shah had called up the Chief Minister twice today to enquire about the flood situation in the State. He also said that an inter-ministerial team would come to Assam soon to assess the damage caused by the floods. Meanwhile, although water has receded, the flood situation in the State continues to remain grim. In the last 24 hours, 10 persons lost their lives in floods and landslides across the State, taking the death toll in this flood season to 81.

In a tragic incident, two police personnel lost their lives in the Nagaon district on Sunday night. The incident took place in the Kampur area. Officer in-charge of Kampur PS, Samujjal Kakoti and constable Rajiv Bordoloi, along with their colleagues, had gone to a nearby village to conduct an operation against some miscreants. Both of them drowned in the flood water and went missing. Their bodies were recovered later.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while talking to media persons today, condoled the demise of the two police personnel. He assured that the government would extend all possible help to their families. The Assam Police headquarters in Guwahati observed a two-minute silence to pay tribute to the two police personnel. Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta was also present.

Meanwhile, according to the flood bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods had affected 47,72,140 people of 5,424 villages in 32 districts in the State. A total of 2,31,819 inmates are taking shelter in 810 relief camps in the State while seven persons are missing for the last 24 hours. The rivers flowing above the danger level are the Brahmaputra, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari and Kopili rivers. The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.
