GUWAHATI: For the first time, the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) has approved a fund for carrying out mineral exploration in Assam.

NMET is a Trust set up as a non-profit body by the Central Government for regional and detailed exploration of minerals using the funds accrued to it. The Directorate of Geology and Mining, Government of Assam, had submitted a proposal to NMET through the Mines and Mineral Department, Government of Assam, seeking funds for carrying out exploration of minerals. Based on the proposal, NMET has initially approved a fund of Rs 10.34 crore for this purpose. The fund will be utilized for the exploration of limestone at Voteranglangso, West Karbi Anglong, iron ore at Lengupara, Goalpara and sillimanite at Samelangsu in Karbi Anglong.

These projects will immensely help the State Government in exploration and will enhance revenue in the near future.

Talking to The Sentinel, State Mines and Mineral Minister Jogen Mohan said, "In the last fiscal 2021-22, our department collected Rs 2538.77 crore as revenue from various sources. In the current fiscal 2022-23, we aim to enhance revenue generation.

"We have started a district mineral survey in Kamrup district. If we unearth minerals here which are suitable for exploration, we will be able to generate more revenue."
