Centre okays Prateek Hajela’s Deputation; ‘Rejection Orders’ in Limbo

Fates of 19,06,657 ineligible persons uncertain even after two months of final-NRC publication

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Following the Supreme Court directive to the Centre, the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Personnel and Training (AIS Division), Government of India, for the inter-cadre deputation of State NRC (National Register of Citizens) Coordinator Prateek Hajela for a period of three years. However, uncertainty reigns supreme as to when the State NRC authority would issue the Rejection Orders (ROs) for the more than 19 lakh of people who were left out of the final NRC. This is despite the fact that already two months have elapsed after publication of the final NRC on August 31, 2019.

Altogether names of 19, 06, 657 people were found ineligible for inclusion in the national register in Assam. These ineligible people will be able to appeal to the FTs (Foreigners Tribunals) for their inclusion in the NRC only after receiving the ROs, and that too within 120 days. A total of 3.29 crore people had applied for the NRC, of which 3.11 crore made it to the final list.

On October 18, 2019, the apex court said, “We order for the inter-cadre transfer of Mr Prateek Hajela to the State of Madhya Pradesh on deputation for the maximum period permissible under the relevant rules/regulations.” The apex court also directed the Central government to issue the notification within seven days. However, the Home Ministry (MHA) later sought additional time to prepare the formalities.

Sources here informed The Sentinel that Hajela now will have to get the release order from the Assam government which might take about a week’s time. However, prior to leaving the State on deputation, he will provide detailed directions on the ‘Rejection Orders’ to the DCs (Deputy Commissioners) and COs (Circle Officers) of Assam. The directions will mention as to how and from when the Rejection Orders will have to be issued. Subsequently, the State NRC authority will broadcast the details through advertisements, added the sources.
