Centre receives 7 proposals for new cities from Northeastern states

GUWAHATI: The central government has received seven proposals from as many northeastern states, including Assam, for establishing new cities. Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu informed the Rajya Sabha of this during the ongoing monsoon session.

The union minister said that his ministry received as many as 28 proposals from 23 states of the country for establishing new cities.

Replying to a query, Minister Sahu revealed the proposed cities from the Northeast and the states they belong to as Jagiroad (Morigaon) in Assam, Gumin Nagar (East Siang) in Arunachal Pradesh, Gateway City (Imphal) in Manipur, New Shillong Knowledge City (East Khasi Hills) in Meghalaya, Tanhril Local Council (Aizawl) in Mizoram, Chhathe Valley (Chumoukedima) in Nagaland, and Pakyong (Pakyong) in Sikkim.

With the construction work of the Tata Semiconductor Plant going on at Jagiroad in the Morigaon district, the Assam government has been projecting Jagiroad as a new city and placed the proposal to the Union ministry concerned.
