GUWAHATI: At long last, charge sheets have been finally filed in the respective trial courts in connection with the Rs 270-crore scam in the State's Irrigation Department during 2011-12 when ex-MLA of the Sonai LAC, Enamul Haque Laskar was the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the department.

The state government informed the Gauhati High Court about the latest status of the matter during a recent hearing of a Suo Moto Writ Petition, which was filed in the court in 2019 due to protracted inaction regarding two separate cases registered in the Dispur Police Station (1816/2011 under Sections 420, 409, 468, 471 & 120B of the IPC) and the Tezpur Police Station (1651/2012 under Sections 306, 506 & 34 of the IPC). Both the cases pertain to alleged corruption involving 67 work orders issued against Centrally-sponsored schemes by the Irrigation Department during Enamul Haque Laskar's tenure as the departmental OSD.

In view of the state government's latest submission, the High Court directed the trial courts concerned to "pass necessary orders in accordance with law as expeditiously as possible".
