GUWAHATI: Eighteen children's books were released on Tuesday to inculcate reading habits among children. The books have been published by the Children's Literary Trust, Assam at a time when digital literacy is engulfing the domain.
The books that were released are – Kuri Hotikar Baranya Axomiya; Akonir Mahabharat; Tupipindha Bandor; Xokhi; Sithi; Jik Jik Naamor Bhut Puwali tu; Xipar Xondhanot; Xadhur Dex; Aamar Dexor Mahaan Neta; Kasonmoti; Baaba, Rontu aru Jutir Kothare; Janani Janmobhumi Swargadopi Gariyasi; Sunali Xoixobor Xubaax; Lockdownot Xontihot; Tunahotor Kothare; Pu-Lan-Si; Pathpodorxok and Voltaire.
Speaking at the book-release function, Trust chairman and Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said, "In the present times, parents should also read children's books. Such books will help them understand their children's thoughts and emotions. I also read books for teenagers because I have a teenage daughter."
"We cannot force our children to understand our views and problems," he added.
He lauded the 'Padhe Bharat, Bade Bharat' 100-day reading campaign launched by the Government of India and underscored the benefits of the habit of reading books. "Reading is a good habit. I make it a point to read for half an hour every day," he said.
He said that book fairs were being held in rural and remote areas, and this was a good sign. He added that earlier the national curriculum in Anganwadi centres for children between 3 and 6 years laid stress on nutrition and playing only. But now, under the National Education Policy 2020, the thrust is also on education.
Dr Pegu said that the Children's Literary Trust, Assam had been entrusted with the responsibility of publishing books on early childhood and preparing documentation for pre-schools.
Padmashri Arup Kumar Dutta, vice-president of Children's Literary Trust and children's book writer, said, "Times have changed. Writers who write children's books now must keep in mind the psychology of the children."
Hrishikesh Goswami, secretary of Children's Literary Trust, said, "We keep organizing reading competitions to inculcate the habit of reading among people."
Among others, Bandita Phukan was present in the programme. Awards were also distributed among the winners of various competitions organized by the Children's Literary Trust.
The Children's Literary Trust has published over 300 children's books so far for the spread of literacy among children.
