CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pema Khandu discuss border issues

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday held a discussion with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu in Guwahati on the border row between the two States. Various officials of both States were also present during the discussion.

After the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma said, "Solving boundary issues with neighbours is our priority. Today I discussed with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu who came all the way to Guwahati." He further said, "We discussed what measures should be taken for a permanent resolution of the long-standing border issues between the two States. It was decided to conduct ground-level survey on boundary status."

According to sources, Assam has boundary dispute with Arunachal Pradesh at 1,200 places. Cases pertaining to Assam's boundary disputes with Arunachal Pradesh are pending in the Supreme Court.

Chief Minister Khandu had earlier said that both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh had agreed to go for an out-of-court solution to all border issues. He expressed hope that in the next few months, there would be some concrete results towards resolving the border row.

The States of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh are locked in several boundary disputes. Encroachment in border areas has led to several incidents of violence in the past.
