CM Himanta offers condolences to Bagaria family, pledges strict action

DIBRUGARH: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited the residence of animal rights activist Vineet Bagaria, who committed suicide recently, and offered condolence to the bereaved family.

"It is a complete failure of the Dibrugarh district administration. I am ashamed of it. I tender an apology before the Bagaria family and the people of Assam. The Dibrugarh police might have failed to get the essence of my message that the police needs to be tough with criminals. We will take stern action against the culprits," Sarma said.

Sarma interacted with the family members of the deceased and assured to take steps against the culprits.

The Dibrugarh police on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the suicide of Vineet Bagaria. The persons were arrested on a charge of abetting of suicide. They have been identified as Baidullah Khan and Nishant Sharma. They were arrested by a team of the Dibrugarh police from Lumding. Two more accused, Sanjay Sarma and Izaz Khan, are still absconding.

On Thursday, Vineet Bagaria hung himself to death at his residence at the Shani Mandir road in Dibrugarh. His family took him to hospital but doctors declared him as brought dead.

Before his death, Vineet had recorded a video where he accused Baidullah Khan, Sanjay Sharma and Nishant Sharma of physically and mentally torturing him and his family over a piece of rented property.

Vineet was the co-founder of the Animal Welfare People (AWP), an NGO which takes care of stray dogs. His group had rescued many dogs which were injured in accidents. During Covid-19 pandemic, Vineet had fed many stray dogs. His love for animals encouraged many youngsters to join the NGO.
