CONNECTIVITY IN DIRE STRAITS

STATE OF AFFAIRS IN ASSAM: Will connectivity woes ever end in the State? Leaving bridges ‘half done’ for years is common, and the suffering of people is increasing beyond measures. An RCC bridge on the Dokmoka Bazar-Bandhangaon Road in Karbi Anglong district is a glaring example of negligence. The work of the bridge that was started way back in February, 2014 is far from being completed. Who is to blame for such a situation – the PWD, contractors, or any other department? The loss which the State has to incur for such ‘half-hearted’ work is also beyond measure. Needless to say, apart from the suffering of the masses, huge amounts of public money go waste. The reasons behind such a sorry state of affairs are – negligence on the part of contractors, the PWD and the Finance Department. Sometimes, the Finance Department doesn’t release on time the sanctioned funds for such bridges. There are also cases when the PWD doesn’t pursue the Finance Department for the release of the remaining funds for such works. Surprisingly, the PWD often stops short of taking action against the erring contractors. The moot questions: How will the government solve this problem? Does it have any out-of-the-box solution?
