Construction of 9 model degree colleges under RUSA not complete

GUWAHATI: Construction of eight of the 17 MDCs (Model Degree Colleges) under RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) in the state is complete. The remaining nine MDCs are at various stages of construction.

Talking to The Sentinel, A RUSA official said, "Assam got 12 model degree colleges under RUSA-I and five under RUSA-II. The construction of five-degree colleges under RUSA-I was over in 2017, and classes began since then. These five-degree colleges – one each at Tulungia in the Bongaigaon district, Dolgaon in the Darrang district, Amjonga in the Goalpara district, Behali in Biswanath Chariali and Eraligool in the Karinganj District— have science stream, barring the one at Tulungia that has both science and commerce streams.

"The funding pattern for these model degree colleges is 50:50 between the State Government and the Centre. The government named all the five model degree colleges as PDUAM (Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Adharsha Mahavidyalaya).

Three model degree colleges -- one each at Borkhola in Cachar, Deithor in Karbi Anglong and Kakopathar in Tinsukia – under RUSA-I were complete in 2020, and classes began. All these three colleges have only an arts stream. "The construction of the remaining four-degree colleges under RUSA-I has been slow due to, what the authorities say, glitches in land acquisition and other issues. However, among these four model degree colleges, the one located at Katlichera in the Hailakandi District started class in another campus. We hope that three other colleges located at South Salmara, Samaguri in the Nagaon District and Lahorihat in the Morigaon District will start the academic session in 2022.

"Under RUSA-II, Assam got five model degree colleges – one each in the Baksa District (16 per cent works over), Harisingha in the Udalguri District (15 per cent), Baghbor in the Barpeta district (32 per cent), Dima Hasao (7 per cent) and Dhubri (30 per cent). The government approved Rs 12 crore under RUSA-II – Rs 10.80 crore by the Centre and Rs 1.20 crore by the State Government. Model degree colleges come up with approval from the UGC (University Grant Commission).
