GUWAHATI: The new year has brought good news for the people of Assam. Construction work of another bridge over the Brahmaputra at Jogigopa on National Highway (NH)-17 has started.

This double-lane bridge will be constructed parallel to the existing two-lane bridge. This project has been sanctioned by the Government of India and it will be monitored by the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). After the tendering process, the contract for construction of this bridge was awarded by the NHIDCL headquarters to Satpal (SP) Singla Constructions Pvt. Ltd.

As per the agreement, the tentative target for the completion of the bridge is November 2024. This project is titled 'Construction of two-lane bridge with its approaches across River Brahmaputra on NH-17'. The length of the bridge and the approach road is 4.39 km. This project was sanctioned with a budget of Rs 746.76 crore but work has been awarded for Rs 402.75 crore. The project will be executed under Bharatmala, the centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project of the Government of India.

Talking to The Sentinel, Executive Director of NHIDCL Guwahati Regional Office, Pankaj Singh, said, "Construction work of this bridge has started recently. Of late, traffic congestion in lower Assam has increased. The bridge will streamline the traffic management in lower Assam. We expect the bridge to be completed within the set time frame."
