Constructions banned around Deepor Beel

BY A STAFF REPORTER

Guwahati, March 28: The Kamrup Metro district administration on Friday issued an order prohibiting earth-filling and construction activities in and around the Deepor Beel with a view to preserve the ecological balance in the area.

The order was issued after a survey conducted at the nearby areas of Deepor Bill and Pamohi river by a team comprising ADC Rajib Prakash Baruah, Guwahati revenue Circle Officer Lakkhindan Saharia, Azara revenue Circle Officer Pulok Patgiri and Ranger (water bodies) D Gogoi.

While it has been observed that earth-filling and new construction works are going on in the immediate vicinity of the Deepor Beel, which is notified as a water body under the Guwahati Water Bodies (Prevention and Conservation) Act, 2008, and while such haphazard earth-filling and construction works may adversely affect the tural flow of water as well as the ecological balance of the entire area and also block the flow of water from other areas of the city, creating situations like artificial floods inundating large areas in and around Guwahati city, an immediate need is felt to direct all the concerned enforcement agencies like Revenue Circle Officers, District Police, Forest Department, and planning and regulatory bodies like GMC, GMDA, panchayat functiories, etc, not to permit any earth-filling and construction activities in and around the Deepor Beel, stated the order issued by Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro.

It said that it is necessary to take immediate preventive steps to stop the earth-filling and construction works in the areas under Azara and Guwahati Revenue Circles around the Deepor Beel.
