GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 scene is fast deteriorating in the State with rise in the number of deaths and community spread of the virus in different districts.

While two COVID positive patients who were undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) died on Thursday, conditions of some patients at the same hospital have turned critical. The deceased were from Beltola (70 years) and Karbi Anglong (56 years). Two others aged 72 and 68 died in the AMCH. Yet another COVID-19 aged 38 died in the MMCH. There are reports that two COVID patients died at city's two different private hospitals. As per official records, 27 COVID positive patients have in the State died so far.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited the ICU at GMCH and took stock of patients' condition. He hinted starting of plasma therapy in case condition of COVID patients at GMCH deteriorates further.

Sarma said that the State has to go a long way in its fight against the pandemic. He said even though the virus infection rate in Guwahati has gone down due to the ongoing lockdown, the number of positive cases is increasing in other districts.

While Golaghat and Jorhat districts have come under complete lockdown from Thursday, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Dhubri, Nagaon, Kokrajhar and Nalbari have imposed restrictions on movement of people to-and-fro Kamrup Metropolitan district.

Before imposition of the 14-day lockdown in Guwahati from the midnight of June 28, the COVID-19 infection rate was 30 per cent. The rate has now come down to 12 per cent in the city, the Health department sources said.
