GUWAHATI: The improvement of the Covid-19 situation in the Kamrup (M) district is not up to the expectations of the Health Department. The Covid scene in the district keeps fluctuating.

The Health Department detected as many as 1,644 Covid-19 positive cases in the metropolitan district in the past ten days – from July 29 to August 7. The infected patients in Kamrup (M) include the local people of Guwahati and people who came to Guwahati from other districts. It is glaringly visible in Guwahati, especially in markets, that the people are not following Covid-appropriate behaviour strictly.

Talking to The Sentinel, GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital) Principal Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya said, "The Health Department detected 159 Covid-19 positive cases in Guwahati yesterday against the detection of 121 cases the day before. The number of Covid-19 positive cases keeps fluctuating in the district. Certainly, there is an improvement in the Covid situation in the metropolitan district, but the improvement is not up to our expectations. If we are to beat Coronavirus, we need to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour religiously. Some are very casual in markets in the city."

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora tested Covid-19 positive. He is under treatment in the GMCH. He appealed to all who had met him in the recent past to go for the Covid test.

Other than Kamrup (M), the districts that registered more than 500 Covid positive cases in the past ten days are – Golaghat (700), Lakhimpur (656), Dibrugarh (561), Barpeta (523), Kamrup (523) and Jorhat (504). South Salmara registered the lowest number of 18 Covid-19 positive cases in the past ten days.

As many as 5,372 people died of Covid-19 in the State till August 7, 2021.
