Creating Beneficiaries will Produce a Non-Working Class of People in the State: AJP

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has hit out at the ruling BJP for rolling out several schemes for creating beneficiaries that will end up producing a non-working class of people in the State.

The participants of the first conclave of Socio-Economic Planning & Development Advisory Council of the AJP which was held in the city on Tuesday, severely criticized the ruling BJP's schemes of giving cash through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. The participants comprising noted academicians, scientists, retired bureaucrats, doctors and scholars were of the opinion that the ruling regime's DBT schemes would not only produce a non-working class but also create an atmosphere of poor work culture in the State.

Former Indian High Commissioner to the UK and noted Economist Dr Jaimini Bhagwati, who chaired the conclave, said until and unless the burgeoning unemployment problem is solved the State's economy would continue to remain in doldrums. He said the Socio-Economic Planning & Development Advisory Council of the AJP is working out a blueprint to create ample employment avenues in the State.

The participants of the conclave laid stress on creating assets and increasing sources of revenue for the State.

Among others, the conclave was attended by retired IAS officer DN Saikia, former NABARD manager Harendra Nath Bhuyan, Agriculture scientist Dr Sarat Saikia, former vice chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Alok Buragohain, chartered accountant Saumitra Das, entrepreneur Tridip Sarma and the AJP's advisers Basanta Deka and Dr Krishna Gopal Bhattacharya.

Saumitra Bhuyan, professor at an American university, Shaheen Ahmed, a research scholar in Australia, medical specialist Dr Simanta G Sarma and many other Assamese currently based in abroad joined the conclave through video conferencing.
