GUWAHATI: The local train-centered economy of the common people in Assam has come to a standstill for the last 10 months. Saikia, in this second letter to the Union MInister urged the Union Minister to ensure expeditious resumption of local train services in Assam.

Saikia told The Sentinel, "At present, the Railways are running only a few special trains in Assam. But the people want the local trains to ply as their daily economy is inextricably connected with these local trains."

Meanwhile in his letter to Piyush Goyal, Saikia pointed out that though "the local train services in Assam were stopped in consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, unfortunately, no action has been initiated in this regard by the Indian Railways even though three months have elapsed since my appeal".

Further pointing out that "regular train commuters are facing immense hardship due to the lengthy stoppage of local train services", Saikia added, "the worst affected

persons are the petty traders and vendors who travel by train to sell their wares in urban areas on a daily basis, as also the employees who travel daily to their work places in the urban areas and return home in the evening."
