GUWAHATI: While reiterating its long-standing demand for the declaration of Assam's endemic flood problem as a 'national problem', the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Monday demanded that the Centre should announce a special relief package for the badly-affected Dima Hasao district.

In a statement, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah alleged that the "scenic Dima Hasao district has become a disaster zone due to mistakes committed by the Railways". "At a time of such devastation, Dima Hasao must get a special package from the Centre," they said.

They added that floods had created an unimaginable situation across the State and people were suffering untold misery in finding shelter and food. As such, they demanded that adequate relief camps, food items, baby food, fodder etc. must be provided to the flood-affected people by the State Government. The Centre must also not restrict itself to just giving assurances and provide assistance on the ground, they said.

The AASU has instructed all its activists at various levels to help the flood-affected people in their areas.
