GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "We will have to script our destiny ourselves. The coming five years is a golden time for us. If we continue to lag, we will miss the development bus that may not come in future."

The Chief Minister said this at the concluding function of the two-day state executive meeting of the BJP here today.

Sarma said, "Nobody should boast for being ministers and MLAs. All ministers, MLAs and party workers will have to work day in, day out in the coming five years. We are far from the target. If we don't work in the coming five years, posterity won't forgive us.

"The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central Government has opened all doors for us. We need to grab this opportunity with both hands. We need to dedicate every moment to the service of the people.

"Many people question the pace of this government. They say that this government is going very fast. I want to tell them that we are lagging much behind. If we don't work apace, we cannot be among the five most developed states in the country.

"It's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership that helped us tackle a pandemic like that of Covid-19 at ease. However, the Opposition is out to catch him on the wrong foot regarding the Covid-19. The Prime Minister's able leadership made Covid-19 vaccines and oxygen available everywhere in the country. We need to follow in Modi's footsteps. It is the responsibility of the party workers to see that the benefits of all Central Government schemes reach every beneficiary in the state.

"The Prime Minister went to America yesterday. We saw the Assamese gamosa astride his neck there too. It shows his love for Assam.

"Some people question the encounter with drug peddlers and cow smugglers in the state. Why don't they ask why drug peddling and cow smuggling can thrive on the land of Lachit Barpkukan and Srimanta Sankardev? We need to lend a deaf ear to such babblings. We are here to take befitting action against criminals.

"We have taken the BJP to such a height in the state that all opposition MLAs are keen to join the party. Some LAC problems have prevented them from doing so.

"The Congress is such a party that criticized the Bharat Ratna award conferred on Dr Bhupen Hazarika. For us, Dr Hazarika is always in the core of our hearts."

On the peace process with insurgent groups in the state, Sarma said, "We have signed many agreements with rebel groups. We will sign such an agreement with a Dimasa rebel group soon. I'm hopeful that the ULFA leaders who are now outside the country will also sit across the table soon."
